K.H. Littlefield Endowed Profesor of Plant Science

This is a full-time 12 month endowed tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor or Professor that reports to the Chair of the Plant Sciences Department.  Responsibilities of this hire will be primarily to teach courses in controlled environment agriculture as well as assist in the creation of the pertinent curricular development for a hydroponics specialization in the Plant Science Department as well as coursework in aquaponics and urban agriculture.  The Professor will also have the opportunity to establish a research and development program with emphasis on exploration of the feasibility of novel hydroponic crops as well as studies in determining increased efficiencies of current production practices with established commodities.


Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Teach existing course in controlled environment agriculture and develop new courses
  • Actively participate in scholarly activities in the area of controlled environment agriculture
  • Participate in professional development activities and service to the institution
  • Collaborate with fellow faculty and the Greenhouse Manager to coordinate use of the hydroponic facilities for teaching, research, development and production
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements: 
  • A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Soil, Water, and Environmental Sciences, Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering or related fields with controlled environment agriculture experience is required
  • Demonstrated teaching ability in hydroponics and related controlled environments 
  • Must possess scientific writing and technical presentation skills with a record of scholarship
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Successful candidate must pass a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check,  and FBI Criminal Background Check as well as corresponding clearances from the successful candidate’s state of residence, if not Pennsylvania.
Specific Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Teaching and research experience in related areas of controlled environment agriculture
  • Prior experience teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels 
  • Expertise in biological engineering
  • Evidence of successful scholarship in hydroponics and greenhouse production
  • Hydroponic crop production experience
  • Experience with the best practices associated with greenhouse production
  • Understanding of GAP certification and relevant associated processes
  • Experience in experimental design, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation and submission
  • Familiarity with data analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
Working Conditions and Frequently Used Tools:
  • Office, library, computer room, greenhouse
  • Typically sitting at a desk or table
  • Typically standing or walking
  • Occasionally lifting 25 lbs. or less
  • NFT and Dutch Bucket hydroponic systems with associated electronics
