Tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a 75% research and 25% teaching appointment. The successful applicant is expected to develop an externally funded, high impact research program on the dynamics of soilborne diseases, at the population and community levels, and its influence on plant health and productivity. We are seeking applicants that utilize modern technological and analytical approaches to predict, detect, and survey pathogens (including nematodes) and other plant-associated organisms and microbial functions in the soil, rhizosphere and/or plant, with the goal of providing inferences that lead to a better understanding of disease biology and inform management strategies. The successful applicant is expected to interact with other faculty in one or more key areas of emphasis that include the Phytobiome, Biological Control, and Plant Disease Epidemiology. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to interact with internationally renowned Penn State programs that include root biology, food safety, disease dynamics, and microbiomes. In addition, applied research opportunities exist serving a variety of crop industries in the state, including vegetables, other horticultural crops, and field crops including potatoes. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching the plant pathology sections of an advanced course in integrated pest management.
Qualifications to include a Ph.D. in the fields of Plant Pathology, Soil Ecology or Microbiology, or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Applicants should provide evidence of strong potential for conducting and publishing innovative research, competitive for external research funding, excellence in communication with clientele from diverse populations, keen interest and skills to mentor and advise students, a letter of interest stating the candidate's unique strength in the field of Soilborne Disease Dynamics, a complete CV with references identified, a research statement, and a teaching statement.
Strong interest in and ability to engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations in one or more areas central to the College of Agricultural Sciences strategic plan, including sustainability, advanced agricultural systems, integrated health solutions, entrepreneurship, and environmental resilience, is critical. An ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential for excellent teaching and publishing high impact work, obtaining extramural funding, excellence in instruction, and collaboration in research and instruction within and outside the Department.
