Assistant/Associate Professor Plant Pathology/Nematology

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PES) at Clemson University is seeking to fill a 12-month, tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Plant Pathology and Nematology. The appointment will include responsibilities in extension (70%) and research (30%). The position will be located at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center (PDREC) in Florence, SC. The successful candidate will be an integral part of PES's research, teaching and extension programs.

PES encompasses 46 faculty of various specializations in plant pathology, entomology, horticulture, soil science, weed science, and agronomy. The 110 undergraduates in the department are enrolled in three majors (Horticulture, Plant and Environmental Sciences, and Turfgrass) and 80 graduate students are enrolled in two M.S. and Ph.D. granting programs (Entomology, and Plant and Environmental Sciences). The faculty population is 30% women, 15% Asian and 5% Hispanic. Graduate student population is 30% women, 38% non-resident aliens, 3% two or more races, and 1% each Asian, African American, and unknown.
PDREC is one of Clemson University's seven research and education centers located throughout South Carolina. Situated in South Carolina's major agricultural and turf area, PDREC encompasses the Pitner Center, greenhouses, support buildings, and 2,300 acres of agricultural lands, managed forests and natural habitats. The recently renovated Pitner Center houses state-of-the-art laboratories, offices and classrooms, including a fully equipped pathology and nematology laboratory. The turf research area constitutes about 12 acres of warm- and cool-season turf, and includes eight USGA-spec bentgrass and bermudagrass greens. Two buildings are located on-site to serve as the turf field laboratory and maintenance shop.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded extension and research program on turf pathology and nematology and grain crop pathology. Basic and applied research should generate outputs (including peer-reviewed publications) and enhance disease management on warm- and cool-season turfgrass in the Carolinas and around the country. Extension activities will include, but not be limited to, the development of effective and impactful disease diagnosis, education materials and programming, and disease management recommendations and guides for a broad range of stakeholders in commercial turf. The successful candidate will also serve as the state extension specialist who will assist extension personnel and the campus diagnostic laboratory in identifying and recommending management approaches for diseases of monocot agronomic crops such as corn, sorghum, wheat and hay. The successful candidate will be required to mentor graduate students, as well as participate in departmental, college and university committees. The successful candidate must have a strong interest and commitment to educate and work with students and stakeholders of all racial and cultural backgrounds.
Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Nematology, Turfgrass Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Post-doctoral experience is desired but not required. Knowledge and experience in molecular and morphological techniques for identifying pathogens is expected.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated research productivity, graduate student mentoring, effective extension and outreach instruction, excellent communication skills, and success in obtaining external funding to support research and extension programs.
